Each year the SEO industry unrecognizable changes from the previous one, and keeping up with the latest SEO trends is important to keeping your marketing edge. Google has already made a drastic change this year to their algorithm to favor mobile friendly websites.

So what is coming next?

Nobody knows for sure, but we can make an educated guess based on trends and data analysis to decide what to focus on in 2015.

  1. Mobile

With the changes made by Google, being mobile-friendly that used to be a luxury is now a must. Starting this year the mobile for the first time overtook the desktop in the number of searches made. Mobile users consume content differently that desktop users. They are looking for information to accomplish specific tasks while “on the go”, they’re also more likely to use voice search, as well as access content at different times or in different locations than desktop users. Mobile search algorithms call for different best practices than the desktop ones, so to get a competitive advantage brands will have to quickly and effectively deliver high-quality mobile experiences for consumers.

  2. Fragmentation across platforms and devices

Search queries are fragmenting across a variety of platforms and devices. Search volume is being taken away from engines on Web browsers by online service providers, mobile devices, and software applications, all of whom are building internal search functionalities to better serve their own audiences. Brands will have to optimize their presence for search across platforms like Amazon, Wikipedia, Yelp, and mobile applications, as well as Social Media. While Google is still the undeniable leader of international search it is important to pay attention to other big players in the industry as well.

  3. Speed

Most users prefer fast websites after making a search, which is not really surprising. Users expect the same speed regardless of platform and device used. Also Google is now implementing a website response speed test system and label all those below a certain response time with a “slow” marker. This means that slower websites will be penalized on an algorithmic level as well as users who shy away from “slow” sites. It is now more important than ever to optimize websites and searches for speed.

  4. Content is still King

Google’s latest search engine algorithm focuses less on keyword saturation and more on the quality and relevancy of the content to the reader. This is in-line with the Google’s 2012 Penguin update; “The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s quality guidelines. This algorithm represents another step in our efforts to reduce webspam/blackhat tactics and promote high-quality content.”. To be successful today, content needs to be thorough, as well as engaging and useful, as people have become less patient with Web spam and have learned to spot it more quickly. This results in higher bounce rates and lower time and page sessions for many websites.

  5. Relationships

Businesses that are able to humanize their brand are the ones who will stand out, merely creating content and optimizing its technical components for SEO just isn’t enough to achieve that goal, and this will only increase in importance in 2015. There must be a shift toward relational strategies such as building relationships with brand advocates, engaging on social media, blogger outreach campaigns and reaching out to influencers.
